Folkert Groenveld has shown there’s life in him yet during the fifth game of the Frisian Draughts World Championship match. He beat world champion Marten Walinga in convincing style and with it brought tension back in the match. Walinga now has a 4-1 advantage. There are hardly any draws in Frisian draughts so Groenveld still has every chance. Just like the third game, Marten Walinga produced a gambit during the opening stages. This time on the 10th move. However, Groenveld was leading with a slight advantage. He wrongly returned the piece with the 20th move which meant him going behind. It resulted in a difficult to assess yet enthralling match. Both players took their time with Folkert Groenveld in particular coming under time pressure. Walinga lost his advantage. It became a protracted game. Folkert produced a sneaky move which Martin Walinga, under time pressure, failed to notice. Subsequently Groenveld managed to produce a king which proved decisive immediately. Tomorrow is a rest day which both players will certainly need to be able to continue with this strenuous match. The graph from Scan, the analysis programme, beautifully shows the erratic nature of the game, it really was a topsy turvy game.
