Walinga wins again
During the 9th, rather complicated game in the match for the Frisian Draughts World Championships, Walinga managed to end on top. With a five against five position, Groenveld just couldn’t hit upon the right defensive play. The current score is 7½-1½ with two games left to play.
The game that this time evolved on the board was completely new to both players. Walinga played a gambit again which didn’t look as if it would pay off, however, Groenveld needlessly returned the piece and ended up at a disadvantage. It appeared as if Walinga could breeze through Groenveld’s right flank, however he managed to adeptly block this. A game developed where all black and white pieces were close together which opened up a large array of combinations. Both players often just didn’t pick the right one. Walinga was at an advantage most of the time but squandered his lead three times as well. All in all an exciting game for the public. Scan, the computer programme that analysed the whole game, noted 19 missed opportunities and mistakes. Groenveld just made one mistake too many. He made a wrong move on the 44th and was instantly in a lost position. This game was actually the first one which finished in the end game. Both players did agree that they both could have gotten much more out of the game than they realised when still behind the draughts board.
